Webinar on SmartCity Lab Projects: Intelligent Transportation System

On February 28, SmartCity Lab and the Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality held a webinar on “SmartCity Lab Projects: Intelligent Transportation System.”

The event focused on the EU co-financed project “Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy Plan for Gaziantep” and featured experts from the City of Gaziantep, Turkish Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure and the EU delegation in Turkey.

The overall objective of the project is contributing to the modal shift from private car transport to the sustainable, smart, safe, efficient, and accessible transport modes in Gaziantep Metropolitan Area.

Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality is initiating a major transformation under the Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy (SSSM) to make the city’s transportation infrastructure more sustainable, safe, and intelligent. This project aims to reduce traffic congestion, promote environmentally friendly transportation solutions, and integrate smart transportation systems (ITS). The project aligns with the European Union’s Green Deal objectives to reduce carbon emissions and supports the vision of creating more sustainable and eco-friendly cities.

The Contracting Authority of the project is the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure of Turkey, ensuring strategic oversight and alignment with national transportation policies. The Beneficiary and Implementing Institution is the Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality, responsible for the execution of the project and the realization of its objectives. The project is supported through European Union funding, with technical expertise provided by various international and local mobility consultants.

During the webinar, participants had the opportunity to exchange experiences with experts from Turkey. Additionally, companies involved in SmartCity Lab projects showcased their technological innovations.

Among the presented projects were:

  • Dr. Artur Ryguła from Bielsko-Biała University, collaborating with APM PRO and the City of Chełm on a project titled Traffic Management Using VMS: Project Case Study
  • Dr. Szymon Fierek from Poznań University of Technology, working with PTV GROUP and the City of Poznań on the Optimizing Public Transport: The Operational Planning Model in Poznań
  • Dr. Ewa Wolniewicz-Warska, leading a project in collaboration with Warsaw University of Technology, the City of Warsaw, and technology partners, titled Managing Urban Zones: A Strategic Approach
  • Kaz Ioki-Kukiela Ph.D. (c), The John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin in collaboration with the Polish Society for Technology Assessment on a project titled Multicriteria Technology Assessment for ITS and Smarter Cities“.

The webinar was organized by Mr. Jarosław Kowalski, a key ITS expert for the project and a member of ITS Poland Association. The event was also attended by representatives from the Turkish Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure and the EU Delegation to Turkey.

We sincerely thank the organizers and all participants for their contributions to this insightful event.
